Post-Production Update

Last night I finished shooting my footage. I have literally just uploaded my footage onto the computer and then imported it all into iTunes.

I managed to buy an external hard-drive so that I could move across my documents, thus freeing space so that my video footage can be stored.

After uploading my footage into iMovie, it has added up my footage time and I have shot around 20 minutes. Although it's quite a lot for such a short production, it will be good when it comes to editing as I will have a lot of footage to choose from.

I am now about to review my footage.

As I filmed when the sun was setting, the lighting wasn't very good at all, which I mentioned in one of my previous blog entries. I am going to see if if I can figure out how I can change the lighting saturation on the iMovie setting, which will help greatly.

Tonight I am hoping to get some editing started, so that I am in full swing for Thursday and Friday's lesson, enabling me to meet Friday's deadline...

Wish me luck! :)

Lighitng Problems

I have just spoken to Mr Earl about the lighting problems that occured last night whilst filming and I have found a way to overcome the problem.

He showed me how to change the exposure and the white balance, which I tried to do last night, however didn't succeed. Although I won't have time to shoot all of my footage again, I know for future reference that I have the oppurtunity to change the exposure etc, to overcome lighting problems.

Hopefully the filming will go better tonight...

Wish me look! :)

Commentator Notes

During shooting my footage last night, I got my Mum (Joanne) to comment on the good and bad features of my directing and the use of my shots etc.

Here are her notes:

The use of filming last night has been a massive learning curve for me and I have realised that things don't actually go to plan if you don't do trial runs first!

I should've known that, however with the last videos on practising the shots, they went so smoothly, that I didn't realise the implications that could occur when filming this footage.

Tonight we are going back to film the rest of my footage and I will be ready to start editing. After I uploaded the footage that I filmed last night onto my Mac, I then tried to upload it to iMovie and a message appeared telling me that my start-up disc was full. Due to this, I am going to have to buy an external hard-drive to put my laptop documents etc. onto there, so that I have room to save and create videos.

So, after I have transferred my documents onto a hard-drive, I will be able to start the editing process and I can also upload the rest of the footage that I record tonight.

This has definitely been a HUGE learning curve!

Filming Update

Just finished filming scene 1 and part of scene 2. It was definitely harder than I thought!

I have learnt that I need to do a run-through of the whole thing before actually filming. I came across a few problems as a result.

During filming the garage scene, we were using a spotlight and the camera wasn't adjusting to the light very well. After filming for about 10 minutes, the light was beginning to dim and it was dying, which certainly wasn't planned! So, this is when we had to stop filming and come inside.

I was hoping to get all of the footage filmed tonight, however the light was an issue as the spotlight died.

Overall, the lighting was a major problem and I found a perfect setting on the camera, however it wouldn't let me record on that setting, so I had to record on another setting where the light wasn't good at all. I really wasn't impressed with that and I had no idea how to record on the setting that was perfect for the setting. This is a problem that I will have to solve in the future. I am going to speak to Mr Earl tomorrow and ask what the problem is and see why I couldn't press record on that particular setting.

I am coming back to the apartment tomorrow to finish the rest of the filming and I will make sure I film quick enough so that the spotlight won't die.

I will update you tomorrow and let you know if I overcome any of the problems that have occurred tonight.

Pre - Production Planning

I am not currently filming at the moment, however I have planned when I am going to film and the location that I will use.

I am going to start my filming process on Sunday night just before Sunset as I want the effect of it just getting dark, as I am filming.

Call Sheet

Location: Durham City, Ferens Park Apartments

Time: 5:30 - 6pm

Props: Apartment garage door, spot light

Characters: Luke Brocklesby (Number 2), David Dowson (Number 6)

Clothing: Luke Brocklesby needs to be wearing a smart suit, David Dowson needs to be in jeans and a top, looking scruffy and confused

Before I chose the location of the apartment, I looked at using my boyfriends family farm, however as I mentioned in my previous blog entry, the transport was going to be a problem.I had Luke take a picture of the metal door, so that I could compare that with the appartment metal door.

Although there was an issue with the transport for getting to the farm, after scouting the location using the picture, I realised that the metal doors were not what I wanted and they wouldn't fit in well with my piece of work.

Instead I chose to use the appartment garage door and this was perfect for my task. As it fit into the script well by having a button that I pressed and then the door opened, mixed the futuristic idea in with the modern world.

After scouting out the woodland area near where I live, I realised that it wasn't going to be right for my time of filming, so I chose to use the woodland area by my grans apartment and that fits in perfectly.

Storyboard

Just got my storyboard produced and planned.

I have scanned in into the computer and I just going to upload it...It gives you a clear view on what I am planning to do to shoot my footage!

Planning

Whilst planning at the weekend, I had a few problems with the task. I wasn't sure where I would shoot my footage, so I made sure that I researched into it.

The script says that number 2 enters a metal door and I was struggling with the process of finding a metal door. My boyfriend suggested that I use his family-farm as a location to film a large metal door, however the transport was going to be an issue as it would take too much time out of my schedule.

After thinking of different locations, I thought of the idea to use my grans garage door, which opens when you click a button and it slides upwards, which would create great suspence.

After thinking of the idea of using my grans gargage door for the metal door, I realised that the lights would be a problem when the garage door opens as the lights come on automatically when it's dark outside. I wanted to shoot as it was getting dark, to create the right effect. To overcome this problem, my gran contacted the person in charge of the apartment block (Eric) and she asked him if there was any possible way that the lights could be turned off. After he looked into it, my gran contacted me and we are able to control the lights.

I have now realised that the lights won't be a problem and they can just stay on, however if I do need to turn the lights off at any time, I can.

Let's hope that everything goes to plan when I come to filming it!

I have scouted out my location, and I am going to use a woodland area with idilic scenery, so there will be a contrast between the man in the suit (number 2) and the location - this will add great effect.

I shall feedback to you when I have more ideas and I start the shooting process!
