Audio Resolved
Last night, Paul Soler managed to pull up the gain of the tracks and lower some of the frequencies to enable the speech to be heard clearer. This sounds much better now and I am much happier with it.
Here's what Paul did to fix the audio:
- increased gain to maximum boost allowable in Cubase (+24db) on quiet sections.
- altered compression settings on audio track. Higher ratio (8:1) and increased make up gain considerably to further boost level.
Here's what Paul did to fix the audio:
- increased gain to maximum boost allowable in Cubase (+24db) on quiet sections.
- altered compression settings on audio track. Higher ratio (8:1) and increased make up gain considerably to further boost level.
- tweaked settings on noise reduction plugin. Listened for optimum sweet spot on mid range frequencies whereby Jo's voice was clear but hiss was still being reduced.
- It was impossible to do both totally effectively because of the quality of the source audio recording.
- applied limiter to output channels for audio mix down in order to prevent clipping.
As you'll be able to tell, the audio is considerably better than originally, however will a few minor errors.
Paul has been brilliant at fixing this and I can't thank him enough!

Title Sequence and Song Choice
As you well know, I decided to write the song for my title sequence and I also commissioned James Corker to produce my title sequence, however I passed over ideas, which you'll find in one of my previous blog posts. These idea's included: packages, letter, blood, black and red colour scheme etc. After the progress of making the title sequence started, James suggested I took some green background shots and this linked in with another Bond film, Bloodstone as the Bond girls appear in there.
I have my reasoning behind this...
The title sequence that I had James produce, is based around my research into Casino Royale. During the Casino Royale title sequence, there is cards flying around and the items relate to the narrative of the film and this is what I was hoping to create with mine.
Here are some comparisons:

My letter reference:
I can't tell you how pleased I am with the finished title sequence! I absolutely love it - it reflects my research well and also the ideas that I first had in the first place.
As Skyfall's title sequence is within the narrative, I wanted to go more towards the Casino Royale style and incorporate the story within my sequence, which I did as my film is about a missing package, hence why I wanted envelopes etc.
Also, due to little budget, this was what we could produce! I think it's pretty spectacular, so well done to James.
My song compares well with my research as the songs that're normally played over the title sequence, either have reference to the film such as Skyfall or have reference to Bond, such as the Quantum Of Solace song and the other songs that're in my previous research and because of this, I wanted my song to have the title of the film, like Skyfall, however also be based around the story with the missing packages.
I chose to a "Bond" style opening as it reflected a lot of my research and I think it draws a nice end to the narrative and it pieces together everything, such as the suspects (highlighting them with targets) and highlighting that the storyline is based around the missing package.
The song that I wrote, "Missing" links in great in terms of the tone and the lyrics as I feature the backing track through my flashforward scenes, however by the end when it comes to the title sequence song, it has built up to the fast bit of the song, so I have put my own twist on how the song works out, moving away from playing a full song at the end and I thought this worked particularly well.
Here are my lyrics to show that they link in well with the narrative:
MISSING – BY KATHRYN DOWSON
Verse 1
Don’t let it fall
out of your hands, don’t let it go
Don’t let it fall
and crumble down
You’ll be the one
that’s got to pay
When it’s gone
You’ll have to
get it home
Chorus
I don’t wanna be
the one who’s picking up the pieces
I don’t wanna be
the one who’s chasing after you
I don’t wanna be
the one who catches you when you fall down
I just want you
to find it and bring it back
To me
Verse 2
You best get out
there and take a look
You better find
it in one piece
Just remember you’re
the one
You’ll protect
you when they come
When it’s gone
You’ll have to
get it home
Chorus
I don’t wanna be
the one who’s picking up the pieces
I don’t wanna be
the one who’s chasing after you
I don’t wanna be
the one who catches you when you fall down
I just want you
to find it and bring it back
To me
Middle
You’ve done it
again
You’ve let it go
They all want to
be you
I don’t why
You mess up when
you try
Chorus (x2)
I don’t wanna be
the one who’s picking up the pieces
I don’t wanna be
the one who’s chasing after you
I don’t wanna be
the one who catches you when you fall down
I just want you
to find it and bring it back
To me

UPDATE: Evaluation
After feedback from my evaluation ideas, I have decided to post a more detailed plan of my evaluation ideas:
1. I was going to use comparisons from Casino Royale etc and compare them against my film with a voiceover commentary, also including clips of my own film. Here, I will show a range of comparisons, including: shots, music, action etc, showing things like the Casino Royale toilet scene and my toilet scene, the style of my music that is played, including the incidental music and also the action will fit into the shots as there will be action going on during the shots.
2. I am going to show the different characters and include a voiceover commentary explaining myself. Here, I will compare screen shots from my research such as Trainspotters as there are a variety of different social groups represented during the opening of that.
3. I was going to produce a written piece for this, showing screen shots of the Columbia ident etc, however I might do a voice commentary instead, I haven't decided. Here, I will also provide examples of the films that're supporting by the same institution as my film, showing that my research reflects my finished production.
4. I was going to interview Laurene (main character) for this question, asking what he thinks the audience would be for this type of film. During Laurene's interview, I am going to include facts and figures during his interview from Box Office Mojo, showing that my research has been conducted and that it reflects WHY I chose the genre that I did.
5. I was going to interview Smashup Frobo (Paul Soler) for this question, asking him to talk about the genre etc, explaining how such action could bring about possible interest. This will flow on from the last question as figures will also be discussed here, explaining why audiences want to watch action films, shown with supporting evidence.
6. Here, I was going to produce a blog entry with audio comparisons, and also interview Paul Soler, who has helped me with the audio, explaining how he has changed things etc, also including screen grabs (hopefully), or maybe just a voiceover.
7. For the last question, I was going to interview myself in a way, explaining the question in full. Here, my research will be brought it throughout.
SO...now it's just a case of planning out my interviews and getting my evaluation underway.
UPDATE ON THE AUDIO
I was speaking to Paul who helped my improve my audio and he said that we could just pull up the volume of the speaking over the top of the montage sections and see how much difference that makes...if it doesn't make much difference, I will then have to place voiceovers over the top, which is no problem.
I hope to have this done by the end of the week, enabling me to start my evaluation over the holidays.
Hope my evaluation sounds more detailed than the last post!

Reflection
Today I have spoken with Mr Earl and after much consideration, he has told me to re-record the audio for the montage sections, as some of the speech is unclear, loosing the full effect of the scene.
Previously for my rough edit, I recorded the audio separately so I can use those tracks and see how they work, however if the worst comes to the worst, I can also re-record them again. So, I will let you know how that goes.
During today's lesson, I also started to plan out my evaluation:
For the questions, I have a rough idea:

FINAL PIECE - UPDATE
IT'S FINALLY FINISHED!
Thank goodness...
After a long, drawn out process, my final piece is finally finished.
MISSING - FINAL PIECE
I am extremely pleased with the final result, however there are a few problems:
- There is a slight jump before Thundersteel
- You can't hear "nice" at the end when Laurene says, "nice try", this is probably something to do with the microphone during filming
- There is a slight hiss on some of the audio, however it has been cleaned up considerable amounts
- The 'hiss' is bad during the start of the briefing scene as it switches between shots/different takes, however it is much better than we originally started with
- The audio is now much louder than the original, enabling us to hear the audio much clearer, however some of the voice isn't as clear due to the amount of cleaning up there has been done
- Before Dosh Longrin and Laurene come back in before the incidental music, during the briefing scene, you can hear the camera move slightly
- After the van sound, there is a sudden stop
- There is also a spelling mistake at the end of the title sequence, "Blocklesby" instead of "Brocklesby", however not to worry - James Corker had bigger things to worry about!
Work on the audio
There has been so much work put into cleaning up the audio and I can't thank Paul Soler enough for all of his time and effort in helping me do this.
The levels were wrong and noisy to start with, so we used Cubase 6.5 to master the audio track, however couldn't import Apple Movie file (MV4) into PC Cubase. We then installed the Mac version of Cubase into my Mac and created a Cubase project and backed up the files onto there, then loading up the project onto the PC Cubase.
Separate tracks were then made for audio and music files.
Audio: We added plugins to clean up the sound; A compressor was used to level out the volumes of the clips, noise reduction was used to reduce the 'hiss' and we used a hum remover.
We then altered the levels between clips to ensure uniform volume.
Music: We synced and added auto fades to appropriate parts. We then cleaned up incidental music track which was originally slightly 'hissy', then ducked levels of music whilst speech was present.
Mastered Soundtrack: Limiter applied to prevent dipping then multi band compressor applied to maximise the audio.
Final Result: We exported the audio as a WAV to maximise quality and then added it onto the top of my video files, as Cubase is an audio programme.
Unfortunately, if we removed all of the frequencies where the hiss was present, the speech would also be removed, so everything that we have done is the best we can do.
Although there is still some hiss present, it's the best we can do as the camera microphone wasn't good enough for the job!
My song that I wrote for my title sequence, I have used the end of it for the title sequence as I used the start of the soundtrack at the start of my film where Laurene is walking, so I thought it'd be more effective to use the end of it for the title sequence.
Thank goodness...

UPDATE
I sat down with Paul (who is sorting my audio) yesterday night and we had numerous problems, trying to get iMovie compatible with the software that Paul is using on a Windows laptop.
After many attemps of exporting my film from iMovie in different formats including: MV4 and Quicktime, we came up with the solution of placing the software onto my Mac.
After about an hour, it finally downloaded on to laptop and we managed to import my film into there and then export it, managing to get in onto Pauls laptop, as he has the plugins needed to sort out my audio (it was a very time consuming process...as you can probably tell!)
But after all of that, we managed to get it to work on Pauls laptop and now he has the task of improving the audio, enabling me to sit down with him and add in the incidental music, title sequence song and sound effects, as I deleted them from my film before I exported it from iMovie so that Paul could improve them on his software.
So, I am now waiting for Paul's update on the audio and then I can crack on and get everything done!

Finished Title Sequence
YAAAY! The title sequence has all been finished and I know have a version that I can add to my final project.
I am so pleased with it...I can't thank James Corker enough for all of the time and effort that he has put into it, thank you so much!
In terms of moving on now and sorting out the audio, Paul is coming to see what i've got so far later on tonight, so until then, I need to delete out the incidental music and other music from my project, so that when I export the film, Paul is able to then sort the audio out separately and then add in the music when that's done, which is no problem at all for me.
I will duplicate the movie, so that I still have a saved version of what i've got so far.
But, overall, I am extremely happy with the way things are going and I am looking forward to posting the finished version extremely soon.

Comedy
I am just messing about with my film and I have come across some comical parts! I have decided to play "Swagger", a song that Paul Soler wrote which i've been given permission to use, over the top of all of the montages and it just flows throughout them all, and ducks out when the briefing scene appears for a few seconds before the next montage and it sounds so comical, as Jo and Laurene are being extremely serious and then there is this funny incidental music playing over the top...it just made me laugh!
See if you notice it when I upload my final cut.

Audio Comparisons
So, to show the comparison between the original audio and the results of Mr Earl trying to change it, by removing the background noise/hiss, I have made a comparative video. After Mr Earl tried to change the original audio, to make it louder and remove the hiss, it ended up sounding extremely metallic and alien-like, which wasn't good either.
In my opinion, the original sounds better as you can focus more on it, without having listening to the metallic sound of everything, even though there is still a hiss.
This video will be great to reflect on during my evaluation, as I can compare these to the finished version after Paul fixes the audio.
So, here you go...Let me know what you think!

Titles For James To Add To Title Sequence
At the end when I said 'Luke B', I mean Luke Brocklesby.
Also, the notes down the side tell you where to place them on the screen!
Thanks James.

Audio Problems
So far, the audio has been a problem for me during the editing process as there was a lot of background noise and "hiss" which was drowning out the actors/actresses voices.
Mr Earl took my audio tracks and tried to remove the "hiss", however when trying to make the audio louder by bringing up the gain, it has made everything louder and has given off a metallic sound, which doesn't sound great either. Although Mr Earl put great effort in to it, the audio was too bad to improve with the software that he was using, however I am extremely grateful for all of his effort.
I have spoken with Paul who is producing my song for my title sequence and Paul has suggested that I get my film all finished, ensuring that all of the music and effects are in the right place and also get the finished title sequence on and then export it and from there, we will be able to change the audio as he knows how too.
This has been great news, as I wasn't sure how I would be able to improve the audio, so this is promising news.
The title sequence that James is working on looks amazing so far, I absolutely love it! I am hoping he has managed to get some more done, then hopefully by Tuesday, I will have it added onto my film timeline, allowing me to fit it to the song that i've written for the title sequence.
So, it's going to be a busy week as I need to:
- Sort out the audio - remove hiss and louden the vocals
- Add in the title sequence and song
- Add the finishing touches, editing wise
- Make sure all of the effects are on that I want, however these can be added when I sort the audio
In terms of my title sequence song, there are just a few tweaks needed and then that'll be good to go...I love the work that Paul has done and I am extremely grateful for the work he's put it to it.
Hopefully my plans will run smoothly and everything should be finished by the end of this week if all goes to plan!
I will keep you posted.

Tonight's Plan
Mr Earl has managed to edit my audio, meaning that some of the hiss has disappeared, however some of the clips have enhanced in hiss due to turning up the whole sound of the audio.
I am going to get the incidental music put over the top of my montages and I need to see how the last part of the flashforward scene works out in terms of the music over the top.
I need to get the finalised title sequence song done, enabling me to put it over the title sequence and send to James.
Things are going well!
James has also progressed with the effects and they're looking great...I am so excited to see the final thing.

Green Background Shots
As the deadline is getting closer and closer, James has done a lot with my title sequence and to add some more excitement to it and give it a more 'Bond' feel, I have filmed some shots with a Bond girl doing a few poses etc, so that James can cut those out and place those into my title sequence.
The vocals for my song have been recorded and now the finishing touches just need to the added.
I have given my audio files to Mr Earl to equalise to try and stop the "hiss" of the audio.
It's really just last minute touch ups!
Paul, who is producing/recording my song has also found some old incidental music that he wrote which he has given me permission to use over my montages and I need to play about with the incidental music that i'm using over the flashforward scene as I am unsure whether the backing track to the title sequence song will work as the last part of the flashforward scene runs straight into the title sequence where the song starts and I want the full effect to kick in when the title sequence starts.
So, I will make the touch up's that I need to make and keep you posted.

UPDATE On Everything
I have started to edit in the ES and the suspence as Laurene walks to Jo's office and now I need to continue to bring in the flashforward scene and montage.
I am recording the vocals tomorrow night, so they should be finished by Thursday, enabling me to get the track sent to James Thursday night. I will send him the demo track tonight, allowing him to work with it before he produces the final title sequence.
James has managed to produce some effects such as: letters falling from either side, a blood drop that forms a pool of blood, a letter getting dyed blood red, a target with a bullet hole and a classic bond gun smoking.
I am really looking forward to seeing how he is getting on as I think that my song and the title sequence will fit extremely well.

Yesterday's Filming
Yesterday I shot the briefing scene in the Miners Hall in Durham. It went extremely well, better than expected actually!
I filmed everything in a LS, MS, CU, SRS, OTS.
I am currently uploading all of my footage to iMovie, getting ready to edit, as the final cut has been requested for Sunday.
This week, I need to:
- Record the vocals to my soundtrack
- Edit the briefing scene
- Re-record audio
- Edit last minute sections
- Get title sequence from James Corker
- Ensure that everything is complete
Yesterday, the only problems was, the desk that we were using had large piles of paperwork on it, and I didn't want to completely move it as it was important documents. However, apart from that, the mise-en-scene definitely fit the part much better and I am really looking forward to editing!
I'll let you know how I get on.

Yesterday, the only problems was, the desk that we were using had large piles of paperwork on it, and I didn't want to completely move it as it was important documents. However, apart from that, the mise-en-scene definitely fit the part much better and I am really looking forward to editing!
I'll let you know how I get on.

Filming Today
I am currently doing last minute preparations for filming today at the Miners Hall in Durham.
I have been trying to find some focus setting on my camera, to use the depth of field, however I don't think my camera has those kinds of settings. I found a website that explained it, however I can't find it on mine:
I have also been watching some of the Bond briefing scenes, including Quantum Of Solace and Skyfall.
So, now I need to grab the whisky and the iPad and start shooting :))
Wish me luck!

ES
This would be a good angle for my ES to get my Bond characters walking through the door and get a CU as he walks through door. This would work great.
Sunday
I received my phone call from the Miners Hall on Wednesday afternoon, confirming filming for Sunday. Someone is coming to open and lock up for me, so I think that that is extremely kind and thoughful, giving up part of their Sunday to help with me with my media a-level.
I am going to re-print the actors lines and make sure that they learn them for Sunday. In terms of props, I am going to have:
- Ipad (For Jo to use as information for the suspects)
- Whisky and glasses
I am going to record the naration seperately as well, so that I can layer up the tracks for the montage sequences. I also have improvements to make to the editing which is all explained in Mr Earl's comments in my rough edit, however I will ensure that more is done to get it to the best possible standard. There are just tweaks on the saturation, edits which are too jarring need sorting out and audio etc.
I am also going to record Jo in the shot for all of the montage sections, therefore allowing me to use them if need be, as for the rough edit, I only used a few.
I think it's time to just get filming and see how it goes, therefore then i'll know how many CU's that I need to get etc.
I am going to get more distant shots and then move in closer as the suspence builds up and I am going to use more static shots, rather than pan etc.
Another thing which I will look at is the depth of field settings on my camera, to see whether it is possible for me to get the figure in shallow focus etc.
Tomorrow before filming, I will rewatch the openings of different James Bond films, inlcuding Casino Royale and Skyfall.
The track is pretty much done for the opening sequence, so I will get it chopped down to the part that I will use and send it over to James Corker to use as a guide track. The vocals just need to be recorded, however it's hard to find the time to get them done, so I will also arrange that this weekend.
I am happy with how this is going, however I can't wait to get it all finished so that I can reflect back on it in my evaluation.
